It's a hands-on training program designed to give you the skills to be an environmental leader. You'll learn about current environmental issues and solutions while being trained by experts in grassroots organizing, leadership, media, and campaign strategy. You'll travel internationally with Greenpeace to work with activists abroad. Also, you'll learn how to engage in peaceful direct action, climb, and drive Greenpeace boats!

On top of all of that, many students are able to receive class credit for the semester.

Transportation Interpreter Internship in National Parks!!

Opportunity for College Age Youth. The National Park Foundation's Transportation Interpreter program is looking for qualified candidates to serve as interns in national parks this summer.
Transportation Interpreter interns will be placed in parks for twelve weeks, roughly between May 27 and August 29, this summer and will provide interpretation to visitors regarding the park's methods of alternative transportation. Interns will promote use of the transportation systems as part of efforts to green the national parks by reducing travel congestion and pollution. The internship provides participants with real world experience, housing, a $300/week stipend, and the chance to earn an AmeriCorps Education Award. Interested applicants should send a resume, cover letter, and three references to Matt Ferris at mferris@nationalparks.org by May 9, 2008.

HSU Model United Nations Recognized Again!

The HSU Department of Government and Politics’ Model United Nations program was recognized for its outstanding performance at the Model United Nations of the Far West Conference, held April 18-22, 2008, in San Francisco. Students participating in the program as part of Professor Noah Zerbe’s Model United Nations course collected four Meritorious Delegation Awards, which recognize outstanding academic preparation for and participation in the conference. HSU International Studies major Jonathan Linton was also selected as Rappateur, or best delegate, in the economic and financial committee. The awards placed HSU among the top three performers at the conference for the second year running.

Humboldt State’s Model UN program has grown to represent five countries in just its second year of existence, making it one of the largest programs participating in the conference. In the five day conference this year, Humboldt State students represented Canada, Jordan, Italy, Nicaragua, and Tanzania. At the conference, students debated contemporary international issues and United Nations policy with more than 40 schools and 500 delegates from the Western United Sates, Canada, the Philippines, and Russia.

Students participating in the Model UN program were: Ryan Walsh, Jonathan Linton, Sarah Daniels, and Nicole Quinn (representing Canada); Andrew Bond, Norma Clements, Jesus Solis,

Michael Lockary, and Desiree Woods (representing Italy); Willie Shubert, Kienan Parr, Carly Hanssler, and Jack States (representing Jordan); David Bording, Andrew Bevington, Alan Chesbro, Richard Caccamo, and Jessica Martella (representing Nicaragua); and Cara Brannon, Jessica Ponsano, Carol Hurley, Adam Wolter, and Kaitlin Borstelmann (representing Tanzania). The course will be offered again in the Spring 2009 semester.

Position: Citizen Outreach Director

Citizen Outreach Directors and Assistant Directors manage grassroots fundraising offices. They work with a team of other directors to recruit, train, and work with a staff of up to 100 paid canvassers to build support for the 2008 elections and a wide range of nonprofit organizations.

Position: Field Organizer

Field Organizers work in targeted Congressional districts and major metropolitan areas around the country. They will recruit, train, and work with volunteers to build the support needed to win on critical issues and get good candidates elected. In fall 2008 Field Organizers will help run one of the largest get-out-the-vote drives in the country.

Sound communication and motivational skills, strong desire for political change, and work ethic are essential. We are looking for people who have a strong leadership background, and who are ready to take on a lot of responsibility. Previous field organizing or canvass experience is a plus, but not a pre-requisite.

U.S.PIRG is a federation of state-based public interest advocacy groups. This year we are hiring 100 graduating college students to determine where this country is going: to solve our energy problems; to reform the campaign finance system; to safeguard individuals from identity theft; to fight hunger and homelessness; and make an impact on many other public interest issues.

This is my second year as a Campus Organizer, and one thing I did last year was work with students at Long Beach State to register their fellow students to vote. Since young people got the right to vote, we've actually been turning out in fewer numbers to the polls on Election Day, and as result, politicians haven't been talking about our issues. We broke the cycle of students not voting by being part of a statewide effort to register 20,000 students to vote, and then we turned out twice as many to vote in the election! Over all, youth voting increased by 4 percent nationwide, over the general population which only increased by 1 percent.

We will be holding an information session and interviews on campus on Thursday, February 14 in NHW 232 and at the Career Fair on Friday with interviews in the afternoon. I encourage you to participate in either opportunity and get back in touch with me if you are interested.

Project Vote Smart is hiring up to 80 interns for the 2008 Presidential Election. This year promises to be one of the most exciting and unique years in the Project's 16-year history. After 16 years and the efforts of over 6,000 people, we are finally ready to deliver our Voter's Self Defense System to the nation.
Through our system, citizens can instantly access factual information on any candidate and will soon discover that tolerance of today's political scene is no longer their only option.

We've launched a new website at www.votesmart.org, are running ads in major national publications, and have organized a nationwide bus tour all in an effort to improve citizens' access to information on their candidates and elected officials. Excellence Awards for Model United Nations Teams

In its first year, the HSU Department of Government and Politics’ Model United Nations program garnered three Meritorious Delegation awards at the 2007 Model United Nations of the Far West conference in San Francisco last weekend. The Meritorious Delegation Award recognizes academic excellence in preparation and participation at the conference. The three awards earned by HSU placed it in the conference’s top three performers.

In the five day conference, students represented four countries: Belgium, Costa Rica, South Africa, and Thailand. They debated contemporary international policies and politics with more than 40 schools and 450 delegates from the Western United States, the Philippines, Russia, and Canada.

Summer Internship Opportunity

ANNOUNCING SEVERAL SUMMER POSITIONS in Non-Profit Organizing, Sustainable Housing Construction, and Youth and Sustainable Agriculture Education in the San Juan Islands of Western Washington:

The Lopez Community Land Trust (LCLT) is looking for interns for its programs. www.lopezclt.org. LCLT requires a 35 hours per week commitment and offers a $100 per week stipend and housing on Lopez Island, Washington. Choices include: Sustainable agriculture with Kids Summer Workshops (see SARD program on website), Construction of 11 zero net energy straw bale homes of affordable housing (construction training provided), Office/web work, and combination of organic strawberry farming and any of the preceding. The LCLT needs interns for no less than two months and up to a 12 month commitment between now and March 2008.

Justin Williams wins international environmental politics essay competition

Congratulations to Justin Williams, a student in John Meyer's "Environmental Political Theory" course in Spring 2006. Justin recently won first place in an international essay competition sponsored by Keele University in the U.K. The competition required students to write a 1500 word essay in response to the following prompt: “Governments have failed us. It is now down to individuals to halt climate change.” Here's more information from the Keele website.

Stephanie Burkhalter hired as new Assistant Professor

We are very pleased to announce that Stephanie Burkhalter, from the University of Washington, will join our department this fall. Stephanie will be teaching PSCI 210, Introduction to U.S. Politics, as well as PSCI 350, The President and Congress, in the fall semester. Stephanie has both practical and academic experience in American politics, and is currently completing her Ph.D. dissertation, in which she studies communication of political messages by members of Congress and interest groups. She also has a background in political theory, including feminist and democratic theory. Welcome, Stephanie!

Professor Sonntag Wins Fulbright Research Chair

Professor Sam Sonntag has just been awarded a Fulbright grant to Canada. She will be appointed as Research Chair in Globalization and Cultural Studies at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario for the 2007-2008 academic year. Her research project, entitled "Global English and Linguistic Autonomy," will examine the possibility--and desirability--of countries and peoples withstanding the global spread of English. Part of her research will be to compare Canadian attitudes toward the proliferation of call centers, both in Canada and in offshore locations such as India, with American attitudes. Sam will be accompanied by her husband, Professor Emeritus Bob White, on her year-long sojourn in Canada. Sam has previously been a Fulbright grantee in South Asia (1993-94). She is sure her Canadian experience will be quite different, especially in terms of winter weather!

The Center for Community Change is looking for interns for the Summer of 2007 and beyond. Please see the attached descriptions. The first is our general call for interns --- looking to hire over 25 interns to place with CCC staff and partner community organizations in Washington, New York, North Carolina and Tennessee. This is a great opportunity to learn about community organizing first-hand with some amazing leaders and organizations.
